The star of the season First out, first in! Wilfred Bungei celebrates his convincing win at the Fanny Blankers-Koen games in Hengelo. After running solo for most of the race he managed to stay well clear of all his rivals. On top of that he set a new track record as well. In the weeks that followed he dominated the distance with wins at Seville, Ostrava and Lausanne. Wilfred Bungei already won a silver medal in Edmonton 2001 behind Bucher. In 2002 he broke 1:43 and was the second fastest athlete of the year. In 2003 he looked more than ready to really win a major championship. Unluckily though he fell ill during the Kenyan trials and was unable to earn qualification for the World Championships in Paris. He gained sweet revenge in Brussels a few weeks later where he beat all his rivals in the fastest time of the season.
